Last week-end, I was at the "Textile Art Berlin".
It is interesting to see, what there is presentated, and who counts himself to the Textile Arts.
On top I show the photo from the Quilts of my very respected collegue Brigitte Morgenroth.
And this brings me immediately to the subject which I have brought from Berlin: A lot of textile works of artists were to be seen. Unfortunately, some of the presentation was more than poorly. One had really hard to find the names of the artists or even the titles of the works. If one had luck, a paper with the title of the whole installation hung around somewhere, but, then again, without naming the single works. It was not distinguished between group exhibitions and solo exhibitions and some good work of artist were presented in dark corners.
Some works hung without supervision, what led to the fact, that constantly something was touched. Even a part of an installation was stolen from a colleague of me and the rest of her installation was damaged.
And it was difficult to make a distinction what served as commercial purposes and what should be art, because there was no clear difference between the commercial and the exhibition area.
Unfortunately this let other colleagues hesitate to participate or exhibit at this event.
At my opinion, the organizers would have done better, if they would have stopped this disorientation with some clearer concept. Of course, it was a forum on which you could meet textile enthusiast, this had also happened. It was nice to speak with the colleagues, to exchange textile news and to have nice meetings.
But does it not belong to an art event, to present a minimum of aesthetic principles,
for example good lightening, a clear and unified form, also as naming the artists, titles, a supervision, etc.? A respectful attitude for the works and their quality?
Taking this as professional and serious, could help to come out of the corner of crafts.
And this brings me again to the photo of Brigittes Quilts: The artist decided not to hang her Quilts, she simply presented the quilts on the table, allowed touching and helped to see or feel other aspects of quilt, in this case the haptic effect and the detailed wealth of traditional quilts. Moreover, she could tell us to each of her abstract works a history and assigned the used materials to one of the countries in which they inspired her, or in which they have begun and have been worked.
Who wants to admire her Quilts then in a traditional, professional exhibition, can visit her and the quilts at the European Patchwork Meeting in France in september.
